Ron Vaughn Petite Triangle mallets: Ron Vaughn Tria-4's are among the most unique mallets. They are offered with Birch shafts,
Tria-4B, or with Rattan shafts, Tria-4R. The alloy mallet head of the Tria-4's is 1/2 inch solid aluminum.
Playing a triangle with these round shaped strikers/mallets doesn't make much sense, until you hear the result. Not for everyone, the Tria-4's produce a clarity and brilliance rarely found, and require more from the performer in terms of skill, dexterity, and control when playing triangles. The Tria-4's are also excellent on some bell parts, particularly physically smaller bell sets, like the original miniature Deagan Round Top sets.
"I used just that little Deagan set of bells when I toured with Johnny Mathis and Denise Williams in the 1970's. George Gaber had the set, and loaned them to me for those tours. John had a hit tune called 'Too Much Too Little Too Late' which had a great little bell part written in. I had made the early version of the now Tria-4's, and used them with those bells. The sound was ideal", says Ron.
The Tria-4's are excellent for some bell parts, depending on the volume and sound texture the performer, conductor, or arranger is wanting. Tria-4's are especially bright and lighter weight than their Petite counterparts, the MBells-5's
Performance Tip: Try playing your best triangles with regular strikers and then with the Tria-4's. The direct contrast will help you quickly decide when the Tria-4's are the best choice, or when you may prefer a standard rod or tapered tear-drop striker.
